Spotlight - an interview with Carol Hathorne from Woman Alive magazineHave you always been interested in angels? Always, and I’ve been fascinated to discover just how many references there are to them in the Bible – about 300 in fact! What prompted you to write the book? I wanted to explore the biblical evidence and it seemed to make sense to do so under certain headings – angels who were purely ‘messengers’ (which the word actually means in Greek and Hebrew), and those who were guardians, ministers, and also travelling companion. I have used these same headings to explore the many and varied present day angelic experiences which people have shared with me. I’ve written the book with Christians in mind, but I have also tried to make it accessible for those with no Scriptural knowledge, but who are open minded enquirers. Have you had personal experience of angels? I have never personally seen an angel, but I have felt their presence very closely when in a situation fraught with danger. As a child, also definitely heard singing on the night my 92-year-old great grandmother died. The next day, without our conferring, my mother asserted: ‘I know Gran’s all right. I heard the angels singing last night!”
All kinds of people have shared angelic experiences with me – some more likely to describe them as “something I couldn’t explain”. I don’t think here is any particular ‘type’ likely to have met an angel. I think it’s a question of perception and expectation. Many people who believe in God have no problem with the idea that he sends his angels to guard, minister, accompany us, etc. I can’t see any controversy in this. What’s been the most amazing experience you have heard about as you have researched the book? The most amazing experience in my book is where a woman, going through a terrible time in her life, prayed that Jesus would help her. And a great big wing, full of feathers, suddenly came right over her as she lay in bed with her little girl. “In a second, all my terrors had gone,” she old me. “The last thing I remember before falling into a wonderful sleep was pulling my small daughter under the wing with me!”
