The People's Bible Commentary - 1 Corinthians

Paul's first letter to the Christians in Corinth was written to help them live out their faith in one of the largest and most notorious cities in the ancient world. He had to provide teaching to help them grapple with such questions as 'what does "freedom in Christ" mean?', 'how should believers practice the gifts of the Spirit?' and 'what is the role of women in the worshipping community?'

The apostle's worlds of confrontation, correction, reconciliation and blessing still resonate in our lives today.

Jerome Murphy-O'Connor, OP is Professor Emeritus of New Testament at the Ecole Biblique in Jerusalem. His research focuses on Paul, the historical Jesus, and the archaeology of Jerusalem. Recently he published Paul: His Story (OUP, 2005); Jesus and Paul Parallel Lives (Liturgical Press, 2007) and Becoming Human Together (SBL, 2009).
