Job

The book of Job airs the problem of undeserved suffering, through the case of a God-fearing man who undergoes a series of calamities until even his wife advises him to 'curse God and die'. At stake is the question of why he is good - is it only because he has enjoyed prosperity or is it due to a genuine faith and trust in God?

As part of the Old Testament wisdom literature, Job focuses on universal human experience, on the struggle to find a moral path through the maze of choices, and on trying to understand life's hard times. It is a masterpiece of world literature that continues to speak to suffering people, because of its sensitivity and depth of insight.

Dr Katharine Dell is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Divinity at Cambridge University and Director of Studies in Theology at St Catharine's College. She has written two other books on Job, as well as a general introduction to Old Testament wisdom literature: Get Wisdom, Get Insight (DLT, 2000).
